I like doing both at the same time even with a little wood or media as a buffer. I was doing millet and they were out so now sorghum at 60% oat and 40% small grain. The smaller the grain is better for Noc-in but easier to fuck up. Oats buffer as well and hold more water without popping plus usually cheaper.
I know it’s blasphemy but I use to cook grains and it went okay but varied between who was doing it, hard to be precise with MC and the time of year bc it was outside I guess.  recently I’ve been dry bagging but where I had failed in the past, now I let it sit for 5-24 hours (depending on the day/week) and stir it once or twice and it seems to be going perfectly. Nailing down the exact MC I needed took a few and getting a legit auto also changed the game for me.Â
